課程概述

Drawing on studies in psychology, management, and communication, this course covers a variety of topics (e.g., identity, motivation, and interpersonal relationships) from a cross-cultural perspective. The first half of the course starts with an introduction to culture and cross-cultural communication and precedes to mapping world cultures along the dimensions of value systems as well as how such systems affect individuals in terms of development and communication. The second half of the course applies knowledge to different settings and elaborates on how the differences impact conflict management and relational maintenance in various contexts, such as tourism, business, education, and health care. 

課程目標
This course aims to aid the students to understand the importance of culture in individual, group, and organizational settings with the objectives of enhancing communications and managing cultural differences effectively.
Upon finishing this course, students are expected to be able to:
1. Explain the impact of cultural value systems on human motivation, behaviors, emotions, and interpersonal relationships.
2. Cultivate competence in oral, written, and interpersonal communication and skills of collaboration through the group project.
3. Develop a culture-sensitive perspective to understand the cultural differences in various contexts and address challenges in them. 
課程要求
1. Preparation and attendance: Students are expected to prepare for each class by reading or watching assigned materials. Students may be called on to summarize the major arguments of the assigned materials and/or give their own interpretation or critique of them. Regular attendance is expected. Failure to attend regularly and be prepared will be grounds for a grade reduction at the professor’s discretion.
2. Professionalism and active participation: You should come to the class prepared to listen and participate. Your level of engagement with the materials is part of your grade. You are expected to contribute your thoughts and opinions during class discussion and group presentation.
3. Respect: All individuals in the class are expected to maintain mutual respect in the learning environment.
4. Laptops/tablets/cellphone policy: You are allowed to use laptops or tablets in class to take notes. You should, however, refrain from using the cellphone during class time, especially when your classmates are presenting their work.

Attendance 
10% 
Per school policy, failure to attend classes (excluding the two exams) 5 times or more will result in a fail in the final grade. If you cannot attend class physically, join us via Google Meet. Please note that joining class remotely will harm your class participation score, as you cannot join the discussion in class.

Class participation 
10% 
Active class participation is highly encouraged. Although the class is in English, you may participate in the class discussion in Mandarin or any other language your instructor understands (unfortunately, currently, it’s just English and Mandarin, but I’m working on it).

Mid-term 
25% 
This exam covers topics from Week 1 through 7 and is consisted of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short answer questions. 
4. 
Final exam 
25% 
This exam covers topics from Week 9 through 13 and is consisted of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short answer questions. 
5. 
Group project 
30% 
Students are expected to form groups of 3-4 persons and collaborate on a project relevant to cross-cultural communication and management and the team members’ shared interests. The course instructors will grade 25%, and your peer members will grade 5%.
